It has been 30 years after the original Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a major film company and introducing audiences to beloved figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

The preview reveals Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?

Connections from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
