RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
