Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
